In the fall of 2013, I retired from full-time employment with the University of Maryland Extension as a State Specialist for Family Policy. My appointment was in the Department of Family Science in the School of Public Health where I remain as a Professor Emerita. I continue to work as a consultant for UME to co-lead the award winning Health Insurance Literacy Initiative and to contribute to the Healthy Living Initiative.  I serve on the Planning Committee for the 2017 National Health Outreach Conference.

While at the University of Maryland, I was the Maryland lead researcher for Rural Families Speak, a 17-state, multidisciplinary, longitudinal study of the health and economic well-being of rural, low-income families.  The study continues.  I served four years as the Founding Director and Endowed Chair of the Herschel S. Horowitz Center for Health Literacy.

I am now serving as the Project Manager for a multi-year funded project to launch a partnership between the nationwide Cooperative Extension System and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to co-create a culture of health.  I also serve on a State of Maryland rural health study with the School of Public Health and a multi-state research study of the health, health care and health insurance of fam and ranch families.
