He is a member of the University of Maryland Architecture Design Standards Board (ADSB) and, until 2009, he was Co-Chair of the Environmental Stewardship Committee of the University of Maryland Facilities Council. Mr. Sullivan is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, having been awarded the prestigious Rome Prize in Landscape Architecture in 1982. He has served as the Treasurer and Vice President of the Academy's Society of Fellows and was co-editor of its twice-yearly newsletter. He has a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Ohio State University. His research and scholarly interests include the history of garden design in England and Italy, the development of an online searchable image database of significant landscapes (initially funded by a USDA Higher Education Challenge Grant), and the making of livable and sustainable urban environments. He is an active member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and a Registered Landscape Architect (RLA) in Maryland and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, where he practiced in Boston and Cambridge for over ten years. In 2005, Mr. Sullivan was invested as a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He is presently developing designs for several private gardens and has recently completed the garden for a homeless shelter for women with AIDS, a master plan for the Accokeek Foundation (a non-profit foundation that manages the National Colonial Farm on the Potomac River), and a three-acre public park along the Paint Branch of the Anacostia River in College Park, Maryland. He and his students were awarded a grant from the ASLA Archives Committee and have completed the searchable online database for the Fellows of the ASLA.
